Fellowship Program by ITTO

International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) Fellowship Program


Deadline: 14 August 2009 for fellowship activities that will start after 1 January 2010.

Program objective

To develop human resources and enhance professional expertise in member countries in tropical forestry, tropical timber industries and related disciplines, with a view to promoting sustainable management of tropical forests, efficient utilization and processing of tropical timber, and better economic information on the international trade in tropical timber.

Eligible activities

1. Participation in international/ regional conferences, short-term training courses, training internships at industries, research and educational institutions, study tours, and lecture/demonstrate on tours;
2. Technical document preparation, publication and dissemination, such as manuals and monographs;
3. Small grants for post-graduate studies.

Award

The maximum amount for a fellowship is US$10,000. ITTO Fellowships provides tuition/training/ conference fees, transportation fees, daily subsistence allowance, book allowance and other allowances. For post-gradate studies, only a partial tuition fee or a small research grant can be provided. Approved Fellowships are non-transferable to other programs or institutions.

Eligibility

1. Only nationals of ITTO Member countries are eligible to apply.
2. Awards are to be made to individuals not to institutions.
3. Previous ITTO Fellowship awardees are not eligible to apply for another ITTO Fellowship within two years of receiving the first award and submitting to the Secretariat a final report on the activity for which the award was made.

Appraisal

Applications are appraised by a Fellowship Selection Panel, which meets during the sessions of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) twice a year(*1). The Panel com prises six individuals, three from producer member countries and three from consumer member countries, and is chaired by the Vice Chair of the ITTC.

Priority areas

Based on the goals and cross-cutting strategies identified in the ITTO Yokohama Action Plan 2002-2006, eligible activities will aim at developing human resources and professional expertise in one or more of the following areas (in no priority order):

1. Improving transparency of the international tropical timber market;
2. Promoting tropical timber from sustainably managed sources;
3. Supporting activities to secure the tropical timber resources;
4. Promoting sustainable management of tropical forest resources;
5. Promoting increased and further processing of tropical timber from sustainable sources;
6. Improving industry's efficiency of processing and utilization of tropical timber from sustainable sources;
7. In any of the above areas (a-f), the following are relevant:
(i) Enhancing public relations, awareness and education;
(ii) Sharing information, knowledge and technology; and
(iii) Research and development.

Selection criteria

Fellowship applications will be assessed against the following selection criteria (in no priority order):

1. Consistency of the proposed activity with the Programs's objective and priority areas;
2. Qualifications of the applicant to undertake the proposed Fellowship activity;
3. The potential of the skills and knowledge acquired or advanced under the Fellowship activity to lead to wider applications and benefits nationally and internationally;
4. Reasonableness of costs in relation to the proposed Fellowship activity.

Additional consideration will be given to:

1. Geographic and gender balance;
2. Balance among the ITTO priority areas;
3. Competency in the language in which the training will be given, where applicable (eg courses, conferences, study tours).

The ITTO Fellowships are awarded mainly to nationals of developing countries. However, ITTO may award Fellowships to nationals of consumer developed countries when: (a) the activities for which the awards are made are carried out in Producer Member countries and the activities tend to benefit Producer Member countries; and/or (b) there is evidence of technology transfer for activities to be carried out in developed countries.
Deadlines

Deadline for receipt of the completed applications are:

14 August 2009 for fellowship activities that will start after 1 January 2010.

Applicants are advised that fellowship activities should begin no sooner than 1 January 2010

1: ITTO will hold only one Council Session in November this year. Therefore, the fellowship application received for the 14 August deadline will be considered through an on-line selection procedure by the Fellowship Selection Panel.

Asian Public Intellectuals (API) Fellowships Program

The API Fellowships are for those under 40 years of age, as of August 31, 2009.
The project may be carried out for a minimum of four (4) months to a maximum
of twelve (12) months. Up to two (2) API Participating Countries may be visited.

In addition to the general eligibility above, the applicants for the API Fellowships must:
Be under the age of 40 as of August 31, 2009 (exceptions may be made);
Have the ability and desire to engage in research projects and/or professional activities
in the Participating Countries other than the applicant's native or country of residence;
Have a strong potential to contribute to their field in the future; - Undertake the proposed
research projects and/or professional activities for a consecutive period of between four (4)
and twelve (12) months (Note: The fellowship period must be continuous.); and
Undertake the proposed research projects and/or professional activities in up to two (2) of the
Participating Countries, but in a country(ies) other than the applicant's native country or
country of residence.

What is timing?
The deadline for application submission is August 31, 2009.
Interviews will take place in September/October/November 2009.
The results will be announced in February 2010.
The project must be carried out between July 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011.

  • Why do you want to carry out this project?
  • Why are you the right person to do this project? (mention relevant previous experience.)

  • How does the project contribute to the goal of API?
  • What are your past achievements and future plans as a public intellectual? (organization, advocacy, publication, etc.) How will this Fellowship help you?

Research Assistantship at Southern Illinois University

Position Description:

Ph.D. Research Assistantship in the Environmental Resources and Policy program
at Southern Illinois University.

We are looking for a highly motivated graduate student at the PhD level to join
a collaborative NSF project looking at the interface between renewable energy
policy and economics, agroecosystems management, and ecosystem services,
with a particular focus on water quality and carbon. The research will involve economic
and systems modeling of agroecosystems, and the analysis of farmer’s decisions in the
bioeconomy from a variety of perspectives (economic, geographic, environmental) ,
and will be conducted by an interdisciplinary team. Quantitative aptitude,
an interest in economics and policy, and well developed verbal and written skills are necessary.
Experience with multivariate or spatial statistics preferred.

The project includes a good amount of research flexibility, and candidates interested in
the development of student-driven research questions are welcomed.

The student will enroll in the ER&P Ph.D. program. The focus of the program is addressing
sustainability issues -- meeting the economic needs of the present while maintaining the natural
capital required to meet the economic and environmental needs of the future. To this end,
the ER&P Ph.D. provides advanced inter-disciplinary training and research on physical, biological,
and social processes responsible for natural resource and environmental problems facing contemporary society.

The students will be expected to present the results of their research at regional and national
meetings and to prepare manuscripts of these findings for publication in the peer-reviewed literature.

The assistantship comes with a competitive stipend and covers the cost of tuition and fees.
Start date: Fall semester 2009.

Registration and Selection Schedule

All files must be submitted to the registration for the IIEF and then reviewed and assessed by the national selection panel and the members area which consists of experts and practitioners in various academic fields.


Registration and schedule selection for Indonesia

IIEF registration to receive the scholarship throughout the year through IFP Pre-Registration Form which must be received at least every 31 August 2009.

Number of Awards and Study Options

The number of ADS awards each year will depend on Australian government budget appropriations. In the 2009/2010 ADS cycle, 300 ADS scholarships are available for commencement in 2010/2011. The scholarships are allocated as follows:

* 2/3 of all awards will be offered to applicants from the public sector category;
* 1/3 of all awards will be offered to applicants from the open category;

Graduate scholarship at AEU University

THERE ARE AN OPPRORTUNITY FOR INDONESIAN TALENTED SCHOLAR FOR GRADUATE DEGREE AT UNITED ARAB EMIRATES UNIVERSITY

I. INFORMATION


1. Ph. D. students must be full time for all students.
2. All Ph.D. students will be supported by a scholarship that will include:
  • Tax free stipend of 10,000 AED monthly
  • Furnished housing provided by university
  • Health insurance for student, spouse and up to three children
  • Textbooks will be provided
  • Round trip air tickets to home country for student, spouse and up to three children(for expatriate students) annually.
  • Tuition will be charged for the Ph.D. program on a credit hour basis and all admitted students will be eligible to receive sponsorships of tuition. Students admitted to the Ph.D. program who do not receive external sponsorships will be eligible for University sponsorship of tuition charges.
4. The expected duration of the Ph.D. program will be 3-4 years post Bachelor’s degree or 2-3 years post Master’s degree
5. The program will consist of at least one year’s graduate level course work, passing of a qualifying examination and successful completion of a dissertation.
6. The host department prepare the exact nature of a Ph.D. students’ program and approved by the Board of Graduate Research Studies.
7. Study available include all areas currently presented by the faculties and colleges at UAEU. Discipline field names will be used such as chemical engineering, physics, history, etc.

II.REQUIREMENTS
1. Minimum GPA Expectation:
  • 3.5 out of 4.0 for final 60 credit hours of Bachelor degree.
  • 3.5 out of 4.0 for Masters Course work of Master degree
  • Minimum TOEFL score – 575 expected
3. GRE scores will be considered; GMAT scores for Business will be considered. These scores are not required but will strengthen the application.
4. Two letters of recommendation are required
5. After receipt of the completed application form and supporting information as outlined in the next section, an application proposal will be prepared by host department and will require the approval of the department chair and college dean. This proposal will include a statement of personal goals from the candidate and a description of the proposal program of work.
6. The proposal will be considered by the Board of Graduate Research Studies and a recommendation made to the Provost who will make the final decision as to acceptance into the program.
7. Each of the following will be considered in reaching a decision whether or not to approve enrollment and the proposed course of study:
  • Candidates suitability, academic achievements and potential
  • Suitability and research record of supervisor and, if applicable, co-supervisor(s)
  • Suitability and research record of thesis advisory committee membership
  • Department facilities or their equivalent
  • Proposed coursework, including learning outcome goals
  • Proposed thesis topic or general area of research(exact topic may be approved later)
  • Eligibility and admission to the Ph.D. program are independent of the applicant’s tuition sponsorship.
